Under Culture Podcast #11: I’m Done With Museums
By brian longtin • Sep 7th, 2010 • Category: podcasts • Popularity: 17%
Brian and Spencer discuss Restrepo, Mother, and other fine foreign films; new albums by The Body, Best Coast, and Wavves; the Xbox Live game, Limbo; plus Jersey Shore, Michelle Pfeiffer and the scourge that is Ted Mosby.
We’re back with a new episode, lucky number 11: foreign films, end-of-the-summer albums, artsy indie video games and more. Plus a fair amount of tangents including Michelle Pfeiffer’s best films and why we like How I Met Your Mother but can’t stand Ted Mosby. Oh, and a spirited debate about the artistic merits of The Jersey Shore. Not our most linear and well-planned episode, but a fun conversation all the same.
As usual, join in the discussion with comments or questions on anything we discuss, or anything you’d want to hear us to discuss next time, and we’ll respond on the next episode. Either in the comments section below or via email, we love getting feedback. If you like listening (or even if you don’t), don’t be afraid to leave a review in the iTunes store either.

……….
We both agree that How I Met Your Mother is a very likable show. But we also agree with most of the internet that its main character Ted Mosby is essentially a giant tool.
……….
If you have yet to play Limbo on Xbox Live, we both recommend checking it out: the visual style is original and striking, the platforming puzzles are a fun challenge, and the story is both subtle and fascinating. Our article on the game even got picked up by Kotaku!
……….
In the shadow of all these shallow summer movies, we’ve got you covered with some thoughtful films to counter the seasonal trend.
Restrepo is playing in select cities, or you can save it to your queue and wait for your chance to see it at home.
Mother, the latest work from Bong Joon-ho, offers a non-traditional murder mystery told with style and fearlessness. It’s available now to watch instantly too.
Or for a taste of intense French cinema, try out La Haine or The Class.
……….
The new album by The Body, called All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood, is out now on At a Loss Recordings.
Best Coast’s debut, Crazy for You, is out now on Mexican Summer.
The new album by Wavves, King of the Beach, is also out now on Fat Possum Records.
If you’d like to see the Phoenix unplugged show we mentioned, you can do so here, or see them play live on the streets of Paris at La Blogotheque’s Take-Away shows here.
Oh, and if you’re as curious as I was about what Spencer meant by eefin’, apparently it’s old-timey beatboxing.
Music Breaks:
1. Best Coast - Crazy For You
2. Wavves - King of the Beach
3. The Body - Even Saints Knew Their Hour of Failure and Loss
4. Best Coast - When I’m With You
……….
What else is there to say about The Jersey Shore, really? For one, I refuse to link to it.
Instead, I’ll encourage readers/listeners to check out a few books we hope to discuss on our next episode: Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom, and Teddy Wayne’s Kapitoil. Or even the classic tale of suburban malaise, Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. Maybe if we can convince even one person to read a good book, I’ll feel at least a little better about a human race that includes The Situation.
brian longtin has a lot of reading to do for the next episode, and hopes you'll join us.
